The Department of Military Lands and Cantonments, operating under the Ministry of Defense, holds significant importance within the government framework. Established on 8 August, the Directorate of Military Land and Cantonments, situated at Dhaka Cantonment, serves as a pivotal entity under the Ministry of Defense.
Since its inception on 15 August 1970, the DML&C has played a crucial role in managing military lands and overseeing cantonments across the nation. Led by a Director, holding the rank of Joint Secretary, the department oversees the operations of three Military Estates Offices (MEOs) and fifteen Cantonment Boards.
The management and control of military lands are vested in the DML&C, which operates through three distinct MEOs: the MEO Central Circle at Dhaka Cantonment, the MEO Eastern Circle at Chittagong Cantonment, and the MEO Northern Circle at Bogra Cantonment. These MEOs adhere to the rules outlined in "The Cantonment Land Administration Rules-1937" and other relevant regulations concerning land acquisition, custody, and relinquishment.
Additionally, Cantonment Boards, operating under the purview of the DML&C, provide essential services such as conservancy, street lighting, and water supply. They oversee various facilities including markets, slaughterhouses, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities. Moreover, Cantonment Boards are responsible for the construction and maintenance of streets, roads, and pavements, ensuring the smooth functioning of these vital infrastructures.
