Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College (ShSMC), established in 2006, is the 14th government medical college in Bangladesh. Located in the north-western part of Dhaka near the National Parliament House, it boasts a unique architectural campus and an excellent academic atmosphere. This area, known as the medical zone, is home to several medical institutes, creating a hub of medical education and healthcare. Our commitment is to provide top-tier medical education, exceptional training, and quality research through the expertise of our eminent and experienced teachers. The college is an extension of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital, originally established in 1963 during the East Pakistan period as Ayub Central Hospital. Initially offering outdoor services with pathological and radiological support, the hospital expanded its services to include inpatient care, starting with 5 beds and gradually increasing to 25 beds.
After Bangladesh's independence in 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman renamed the hospital in honor of the great patriot and democracy advocate, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, establishing it as Shaheed Suhrawardy Hospital with 75 inpatient beds and outpatient services. The hospital, designed by the renowned architect Louis I. Kahn, who also designed the National Assembly House of Bangladesh, is celebrated for its magnificent architectural beauty.Over the years, the hospital evolved into a general hospital and central referral center for Bangladesh, particularly serving the northern and western regions. In 1997, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated a three-story extension building, adding 375 beds and major medical departments, along with pathology, radiology, and casualty services to accommodate various patients.
Recognizing the need for further development in undergraduate medical education, the Bangladesh government decided on September 5, 2005, to establish Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College within the hospital campus and upgrade the hospital to a Medical College Hospital. Academic activities commenced on May 6, 2006, with 100 freshman students. The college buildings, including hostels, were rapidly constructed and inaugurated on January 17, 2012, by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Today, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital is an 850-bed tertiary-level hospital featuring modern medical facilities and thirty-five departments. The campus is also set to include a nursing institute soon. To further expand its educational offerings, the institute introduced a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program in 2011, admitting around 50 students annually. The Dentistry Department operates as an independent unit with its own classrooms, library, laboratories, hostels, and subspecialty facilities, ensuring comprehensive education and training for its students.
