The NINS has been planned due to the huge load of neurological disorders. This is the vision of some pioneer neurologists in Bangladesh. Of them Prof. Quazi Deen Mohammad, Prof. Dr. Md. Badrul Alam are the two legends who have given the full efforts to build this dream of 9 storied building within 2 years. The honorable Prime Minister of Government Peoples’ republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina inaugurated 300-bedded the National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar in the heart of the capital city. Addressing the inauguration programme, the premier said the institute would play a pioneering role in treatment of neurological patients and research on neurosciences as well as creating more neurology experts in this country. She also urged the doctors to make the hospital a center of excellence through their ceaseless efforts. Health and Family Welfare Minister Professor Dr AFM Ruhal Haq, PM’s Advisor on health affairs Professor Dr Syed Modasser Ali and State Minister for Health Captain (retd) Dr Mujibur Rahman Fakir addressed the function. Director of the Institute Professor Dr Qazi Deen Mohammad and Director General of Department of Health Professor Dr Khandaker Mohammad Sefaet Ullah also spoke on the occasion with Health Secretary M Humayun Kabir in the chair.nThere are six most modern operation theaters, 16-bed ICU, 12-bed HDU, six-bed Recovery Unit and 12-bed post-operative rooms in the National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital. The hospital is equipped with most modern radiology and imaging department, two MRI machine for modern DTI, functional MRI and MECG examination. A specialized outdoor department for epilepsy, neurodegenerative and neuro-metabolic and other neurological treatment of children, treatment and rehabilitation of autistic children and facilities of genetic counseling will be available in this hospital.nSince the establishment of National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in September 2012 it has been reputedly serving patients of both child and adult age groups suffering from various neurology and neuro surgery related disorders. Number of patients coming to OPD, emergency dept and indoor are also on rising trend. That's why it has become a burning issue to expand the existing facilities to cope with the ever growing patients. With this end in view, we have already acquired 80 decimal land from Ministry of land adjacent to our current infrastructure.Relevant work regarding setting up another 800 bedded modern hospital is in full swing.The newly set up building will serve the following purpose- emergency service,medical services including expansion of service for stroke patients and neuro psychiatric illness,surgical services,diagnostic imaging and support services,rehabilitative care services,geriatric unit with palliative care facility,pediatric unit with new set of areas for autistic and special needs children with all rehabilitation facility,critical care service,outpatient area for better service delivery and research area on neuro care to reduce future burden of illness.nA total number of 210228 patients were attended in the outpatient Department (OPD) of National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh in last year (2016). This is a huge burden to handle the patients. The emergency patients were 20130 which was very difficult to manage. However, the authority and the energetic EMO and the assigned consultants were handled meticulously. The total admission in the indoor was 11755 patients. Though this is a 300 bedded hospital, this is an enormous pressure to tackle the patients. The total number of death was 905 patients. Bed occupancy rate was 100%. The average length of stay in hospital was 9.34 days. Hospital death rate was only 7 .7%.
