Due to the absence of a women’s college in the Magura district, the then District Administrator, Mr. Abdul Latif, took the initiative and with the coordination of local respected individuals, Magura Government Women’s College was established on April 19, 1987, in the abandoned building of the former Model High School. On December 7, 1987, the then District Administrator bought 41% and 83% of the land (current plot numbers 1235 and 1238 respectively) from Magura Model School for 1300/- and 2300/- taka respectively on behalf of Magura Women’s College in a public auction. In the academic year 1987-88, student admission began in the Humanities and Commerce departments. In the academic year 1992-93, the Science department was opened at the higher secondary level. In 1994, the Begum Sufia Kamal building on the north side of the college, the administrative building in 2003, and the Begum Rokeya building on the south side were constructed in 2005. In 1996, the then Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the nationalization of 18 women’s colleges in the district headquarters at a meeting, and on April 13, 1997, the G.O. letter for Magura Government Women’s College was issued. In the academic year 2015-16, the Bachelor (Pass) course was started in the college. The matter of opening a Bachelor (Pass) course in the Science and Business Education Department and an Honors course in various subjects is under process.
