DW was established in 1995 in Dhaka Bangladesh for propagating true democratic culture, ensuring human rights, good governance by strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring free and fair elections establishing transparency and accountability, empowering people especially women and youths through capacity building and rights based approach. It encourages voluntarism and builds skills among the youths and women for attaining economic freedom encourages them to participate in political activities to change the system for greater political and social harmony. DW is a woman headed organization governed by a seven-member Board of Governors elected every three years from the Members of the General body comprised of twenty eminent persons, includes ethnic and religious minority community and maintains strict gender balance. The Board of Governors has the overall responsibility of running DW with the Executive Director as ex -officio member.
