COAST, born from a decade-long project of an international NGO in 1998, emerged as an independent organization dedicated to serving the vulnerable communities inhabiting the southern region of Bhola island. Situated at the confluence of the mighty rivers Ganges and Brahmaputra, amidst one of the world's most perilous cyclone zones, COAST's inception was fueled by a meticulous process of nationalization spanning from 1994 to 1997.
This transformation aimed to streamline operations, reduce overhead costs, and empower beneficiaries to actively engage in development initiatives as equal partners. The establishment of a local board ensured accountability and transparency, laying the foundation for COAST's impactful endeavors.
Acknowledged for its commitment to humanitarian efforts, COAST has attained a special consultative status from the UN ECOSOC and holds registrations with the NGO Affairs Bureau (No. 1242) under the Prime Minister’s Office, Bangladesh Government, and the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (No. 00956-04041-00068). Additionally, COAST is certified by HQAI (HQAI Certificate Registration Number COAST-CER-2017-13) in alignment with the 9 commitments of the CHS Alliance.
Driven by a vision of a world characterized by equity, justice, and freedom from poverty, where human rights and democracy flourish, COAST is committed to fostering sustainable and equitable development in coastal Bangladesh. Our mission encompasses strategic interventions aimed at empowering marginalized populations, facilitating their active participation in socio-economic, cultural, and civic life.
Central to our objectives is the facilitation of grassroots initiatives, advocating for the legitimate rights and demands of the underprivileged to governmental and institutional bodies. We spearhead programs and partnerships focused on preserving the ecological integrity of the Bay of Bengal and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
