The government is going to take a move to convert Kamalapur Railway Hospital into a general hospital with a view to making a comprehensive treatment centre for railway employees as well as commoners, official sources said.
Sources said Bangladesh Railway Hospital at Kamalapur in the capital is facing a shortage of experienced physicians and medical equipment.
Under the circumstances, railway employees have long been deprived of getting adequate treatment from the hospital, they said.
Losing confidence in their medical services, most of the employees and their family members go to other hospitals and spend huge money on their treatment.
Considering the sufferings of railway staff, the government is taking a pragmatic decision to turn the hospital into a general one so that railway employees and common people can receive proper treatment at free of cost, they added.
Public health experts have expressed their satisfaction over the government move as the dilapidated hospital will be operated with new dynamism.
Former pro-vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Dr Rashid-E-Mahbub said Kamalapur railway hospital is now in a sorry state. There is not many equipment at the hospital. This is a barrier to providing medical treatment to patients at free of cost.
“It is a very significant decision for health sector through which comprehensive healthcare will be decentralised and people would be benefited to a great extent through the government’s initiative,” he added.
The step taken by the government is laudable for health sector and poor and low-income people will get treatment at free of cost, he further said.
Another health expert, Dr Shahed Ahmed, said when this hospital will be constructed as a modern general hospital with modern medical equipment, railway’s employees and commoners will get available treatment from there.
“It will create a new avenue for railway employees and common people as the poor will get comprehensive treatment facilities from such a hospital at free of cost,” he added.
The hospital will be a new destination for railway employees, their families as well as common people of the country. It will play a significant role in treating different patients, he pointed out.
Kidney, heart, neurology and comprehensive congenital childhood-related physicians will be appointed to the hospital. Patients wouldn’t have to go to other hospitals for treatment, he assured.
Addressing a programme recently, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim said Bangladesh Railway Hospital would be converted into a general hospital so that railway staff and commoners will get better comprehensive treatment facilities from there at free of cost.
