Higher education's significance in long-term economic and social growth continues to increase more and more. Higher education is considered a method that impacts a human being's knowledge, behavior, and way of thinking; it further flourishes the way and guides people to apply those qualities in real life. The ambiance and scope to get higher education is created through a university. So, universities play a vital role in the overall process of higher education and the impacts students will have. Here are the top 10 universities of Bangladesh that play an essential role in the education sector as well as other sectors. Please remember that we randomly picked 10 names to maintain a chronological order without judgment from our end and tried our best to list according to the available university rankings of different sources!
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is a forerunner in Bangladesh's engineering education. BUET's history extends back to 1876 when the Dhaka Survey School was established. Later, in 1947, it became an engineering college, and in 1962, it became an autonomous university. It is situated on a small 83.9-acre plot of land in the middle of Dhaka, Bangladesh's metropolis.
On January 31, a group led by Nawab Sir Salimullah, Nawab Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury, and Sher e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Hug visited Viceroy Lord Hardinge during his visit to Dhaka (then Dacca). It advocated for the founding of a university in the region. On February 2, a statement was issued announcing the Government of India's intention to suggest the establishment of a university in Dhaka.
The Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was founded in 1986 after a protracted battle and unwavering campaign. It was the only institution of its sort at the time, and it began on the 1st Phalgun (February 13, 1991) with just three departments: physics, chemistry, and economics, 13 instructors, and 205 students. It presently comprises seven schools, 27 departments, and two institutes. The number of professors has increased to 566, while the number of pupils has increased to 8596. In addition, the University includes 12 associated medical colleges under the School of Medical Sciences, with a total enrollment of 4000 students.
North-South University (NSU) was founded in 1992 by the then Foundation for Promotion of Education and Research (FPER), a charity, non-profit, non-commercial, and non-political organisation. The FPER was eventually renamed the NSU Foundation, and it is now known as The North-South Foundation for Education and Research.
The University of Rajshahi is one of the largest in the country and the largest with the highest seat of learning in Bangladesh's northern area. The institution has been delivering higher education and research for 62 years, having been founded on July 6, 1953.
Jahangirnagar University, founded in 1970 as a fully residential public university, presently comprises 36 departments, six faculties, and four institutes, with over fifteen thousand students and around 500 professors dedicated to teaching and research. The large arresting campus is located 30 kilometers from Dhaka's center and connected to a civic motorway. In 1973, the first legislature of Independent Bangladesh ratified the university's Charter, under which the university is now operating.
Brac University (BracU) was founded in 2001 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. BracU's liberal arts approach to education fosters new ideas and revitalizes the higher education sector. Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) is the country's primary advanced agricultural education and research institution. Its scholarly efforts encompass all areas of agricultural science that directly impact land and marine productivity. Based on suggestions from the Commission of National Education and the Food and Agriculture Commission in 1959, the University was formed as the nation's sole University of its kind in sessions 1961-62. The BAU Scheme was finalized on June 8, 1961, and its regulation was promulgated on August 18, 1961. The university legally-established itself on September 2, 1961, with the appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor, and began operations with the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (CVSAH) in Mymensingh as its initial campus.
The University of Chittagong is one of the oldest universities in Bangladesh. It was founded in 1966. CU continuously grows in its quality teaching, in-depth research, and tangible infrastructural developments with commendable architectural designs. As one of the largest and oldest universities in Bangladesh, it comprises ten faculties, including the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries and Faculty of Medicine.
Daffodil International University (DIU) has been named one of the best institutions in Bangladesh by independent government assessments. Daffodil Group founded the university with the approval of the Ministry of Education under the Private University Act of 1992 and its amendment in 1998. Daffodil International University was established on January 24, 2002. Today's university combines impressive modern facilities and a dynamic approach to teaching and research with its proud heritage of service and achievement.
