It is a great honour and responsibility to be the principal for the Baptist Mission Integrated School (BMIS). BMIS has been working hard to educate visually impaired girls in the Mirpur area of Dhaka since 1977, constantly striving to improve the level of services offered. BMIS has been a light of hope for the families of visually impaired girls in Bangladesh, playing an important role in society by providing quality education for the girls, giving them a confidence and an ability to enjoy life to a level that they would otherwise not achieve. BMIS impacts Bangladesh nationwide as a specialist school able to assist public schools to successfully integrate students with visual impairments into mainstream schools.
The ability to produce braille books and teaching materials at the school, when suitable materials are generally unavailable, has meant that the school has led the way in improving studies for blind children with materials free of cost to them.
BMIS runs with the goal of integration for the visually impaired children into mainstream education. The school now has provision for sighted boys and girls from pre-school through to year 5 with full integration of the visually impaired girls from year 4 and they can stay up to year 7.
To enable visually impaired girls from all over the country to attend, BMIS offers special hostel facilities located in the BMIS compound. The hostel can accommodate up to one hundred girls and is fully managed by highly experienced and caring staff.
The intent going forward is to ensure that the facilities are optimally used. The accommodation is a priority and investment in technology needs to be supported with appropriate training and counselling of teachers and staff.
