A green roof system is an extension of the existing roof which involves, at a minimum, high quality water-proofing, root repellent system, drainage system, filter cloth, a lightweight growing medium, and plants. It may be modular, with drainage layers, filter cloth, growing media, and plants already prepared in movable, often interlocking grids, or loose laid/built-up whereby each component of the system may be installed separately. Green roof development involves the creation of "contained" green space on top of a human-made structure. There are three types of green roof depending on substrate thickness, usage intensity, application, vegetation type.
1. Extensive green roofs (substrate thickness 7-12cm, surface weight of load is about 150kg/m2 excluding plants)
2. Semi-extensive green roofs (substrate thickness about 30cm, surface weight of load is around 350kg/m2 excluding plants)
3. Intensive green roofs (substrate thickness 35-80cm, surface weight of load is about 1200kg/m2 excluding plants)
Features and advantages of extensive green roofs
What is an extensive green roof?
Extensive green roofs are lightweight roofs covered with low-maintenance vegetation, such as succulents like sedum, herbs and grasses that are specially adapted to the extreme weather conditions on roofs. The costs of installing and maintaining extensive green roofs are low and they are more durable than conventional roofs.
Advantages of extensive green roofs:
Beautifying the built environment
Reduce heating of your building
Cool cities during hot summer sessions
Capture airborne pollutants, atmospheric deposition and filter noxious gases
Decrease the amount of CO2 and other polluting by-products
Lower burning heat load
Reduced energy demand for air conditioning in the summer by 75%
Reducing electromagnetic radiation penetration by 99.4%
Reduce sound from outside by 40 decibels
Increase a building's marketability
Increasing biodiversity can positively affect ecosystem
Decrease demands for healthcare
Serve as the site for an urban agriculture project can reduce a community's footprint through the creation of a local food system
Teach students and visitors about biology, green roof technology, and the benefits of green roofs
Extensive Green Roof System
One complete system
Our green roof systems are supplied as complete packages – from the waterproofing membrane to the vegetation. We make our own vegetation and provide directly to the settings
Standard composition of Green Roof System
Composition
1. Extensive vegetation
2. Substrate Extensive
3. Drainage System
4. Root Barrier
5. Root-resistant waterproofing membrane
Green roof substrate and plants
Green roofs are hostile sites. The combination of elevated temperatures, wind exposure and high light provide challenging conditions for plant growth. Plant selection requires careful consideration of site, microclimate, substrate and maintenance factors, linked to the desired aesthetic, functional and management outcomes for the project.
