Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force (Ansar-VDP) stands as the largest disciplined force in Bangladesh, with a membership of approximately 6.1 million, including a significant representation of women. In a bid to enhance the economic activities and living standards of its members, the government established Ansar-VDP Development Bank on January 10, 1996. Since its inception, the bank has diligently worked towards poverty alleviation, women's empowerment, and overall economic development of Ansar and Village Defense Force members.
The bank's financial resources are derived from various sources, including paid-up capital, government loans, Bangladesh Bank loans, loans from state-owned banks and institutions, as well as its own income and debt collection efforts. Initially capitalized at Taka 100 crores, the bank's authorized capital has gradually increased to Taka 1000 crores. Of the issued capital of Taka 400 crores, the government holds 25%, while the remaining 75% is owned by Ansar and Village Defense Force members, officers and employees, and the bank's personnel.
Ansar-VDP Development Bank facilitates loans, both secured and unsecured, to its members, supporting diverse sectors such as agriculture, dairy production, housing, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and other income-generating activities. With 259 branches operating under 18 regional offices nationwide, the bank offers 36 different loan products, all managed under strict supervision and in compliance with the policies of the Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance and Bangladesh Bank.
