This historic mosque, dating back to 1440, is a symbol of the Golden Era of Muslim Bengal. Built by Khan Jahan Ali, it spans an impressive 160 feet by 108 feet.What sets the Shat Gambuj Mosque apart is its distinctive architectural features. The mosque boasts 60 pillars supporting 77 exquisitely curved "low squat domes," with seven central four-sided domes in traditional Bengali style. Over time, the domes have weathered, adding to the mosque's unique charm.Initially established for prayers, the mosque also served as an assembly hall and a madrasa, reflecting its multifaceted role in the community. The large prayer hall features 11 arched doorways on the east and seven each on the north and south, providing ample ventilation and natural light. The interior showcases 11 intricately decorated mihrabs along the west wall, constructed with stonework and terracotta. The flooring, made of brickwork, adds to the mosque's historical ambiance.Used as the court of Khan Jahan Ali, the mosque stands as a testament to its rich past. Although some damage occurred, particularly to the walls and mihrabs due to sulphates, extensive restoration work has rectified most issues. The 6-feet thick arches, with a slight taper over hollow and round walls, further highlight the architectural prowess of the structure.Today, the Shat Gambuj Mosque is a popular destination for tourists and visitors alike, attracting admiration for its terracotta and brick decorations. Located on the Bagerhat-Khulna Road in Bagerhat City, Khulna Division, it continues to be a cherished travel spot, embodying the historical and cultural legacy of Bangladesh.
