The Maternal and Child Health Training Institute (MCHTI) was established in 1953 with 20 beds as a collaborative effort between UNICEF and WHO, focusing on providing limited MCH services and training Lady Health Visitors (LHV) engaged in MCH/FP activities. By 1960, the institution was upgraded to a 100-bed hospital.nIn 1991, the government of Bangladesh proposed to Japan for the upgradation of MCHTI, which was accepted, leading to the initiation of reconstruction and renovation supported by Japan's Grant Aid. In 1997, MCHTI achieved certification as a 'Baby-Friendly Hospital' by WHO and UNICEF.nConstruction and renovation began in May 1998 under a contract between the governments of Bangladesh and Japan, with completion and modernization efforts concluding in June 2000. The renovated MCHTI now boasted 173 beds, compared to its previous capacity of 100 beds.nThe newly reconstructed MCHTI was inaugurated on August 19, 2000, by the Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Japan, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards providing enhanced maternal and child healthcare services.
