Established officially in 1998, IOM Bangladesh operates through its country office in Dhaka, with additional sub-offices in Sylhet and Cox's Bazar. The partnership between the Government of Bangladesh and IOM traces back to 1992, when IOM played a crucial role in rescuing 63,000 stranded Bangladeshi migrant workers during the Persian Gulf Crisis.Since then, IOM has been instrumental in providing technical assistance to the Government of Bangladesh on a wide range of migration management issues, aimed at ensuring safe, orderly, and regular migration. Key contributions include capacity development, policy formulation, and program implementation, with notable initiatives including support to the Chair of the Colombo Process in 2011 and the Global Forum on Migration and Development in 2016.IOM has actively assisted the Government of Bangladesh in mainstreaming migration into development planning processes, including the formulation of policies and the integration of migration chapters into national development plans. Additionally, capacity development efforts have targeted law enforcement agencies and labor attaches.Through collaborative efforts, IOM has implemented numerous programs focusing on awareness-raising, promotion of safe migration, rescue and reintegration, and skills development, among others. Notably, the largest intervention has been in Cox's Bazar, where IOM coordinates and implements initiatives to support forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals.Currently, IOM's efforts in Cox's Bazar encompass various areas such as shelter, site management and development, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), health, gender-based violence prevention, alternative energy, and communications with communities. Through these multifaceted interventions, IOM remains committed to supporting vulnerable populations and promoting sustainable solutions to migration challenges in Bangladesh.
