Since joining the FAO in 1973, shortly after gaining independence from Pakistan, Bangladesh has fostered a close partnership with the organization, focusing on agriculture, food security, forestry, fisheries, livestock, rural development, and climate change. The establishment of the FAO Representative office in Dhaka in 1978 further solidified this collaboration. As home to the world's most densely populated flood-plain delta, Bangladesh faces frequent natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, and droughts, compounded by the effects of global climate change. Despite these challenges, the resilience of the country's farmers and fishers is remarkable. FAO was among the first international agencies to provide significant assistance to Bangladesh in post-independence relief, rehabilitation, and economic recovery efforts. While Bangladesh has made strides in reducing hunger and poverty, with its population doubling since independence, over 40 million Bangladeshis still suffer from undernourishment. Rapid population growth and limited land resources continue to pose challenges to addressing undernutrition, compounded by factors like climate change and global food price fluctuations. The country is striving to strengthen its institutions and programs to manage natural disasters, environmental changes, and population growth. As Bangladesh prepares for the potential impacts of climate change, FAO Bangladesh remains committed to incorporating responses to these challenges into its cooperative development initiatives, building on over four decades of partnership.
