After the brutal killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members on August 15, 1975, the house was under military authority till 10th June 1981. Military ruler Ziaur Rahman did not allow any member of Bangabandhu's family to enter into the house. After the brutal killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members on August 15, 1975, the house was under military authority till 10th June 1981. Military ruler Ziaur Rahman did not allow any member of Bangabandhu's family to enter into the house. Even when Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned her motherland on 17th May, he did not allow her to enter the house. So she was forced to perform the holy religious rituals (Milad) in front of the house. The land belongs to this house purchased from public works department by installment. The installment of taka 12,000 was not paid to the house building finance corporation. That is why, the building was auctioned. After getting back the house on June 10, 1981, two sisters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, announced that the historic house will be the people's house. The house was inaugurated as "Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum" on August 14, 1994. A board of trustees is formed to look after the museum and the house of Tungipara. Besides “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum”, “Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Special Hospital and Nursing College” is also run under the Trust.
